You can approach discipline in three ways:
- Military
- Mindless
- Mastery
The Military way is rules, obedience, and punishment. It’s an attempt to create a specific structure with a tight set of rules. It’s doing what you’re told, following orders, staying in line, and paying the price if you don’t.
The Mindless way is trying to make it a habit you don’t have to think about. It’s an attempt to keep your mind out of the way so it doesn’t cause problems or have to work hard.
The Mastery way is trying to make yourself a better thinker, decision-maker, and doer. It’s not mindless it’s mindful. It’s an attempt to show your mind the way so you can do it any time you want, in or out of a routine, with or without a habit.
Any approach can work. There is a time, place, and reason for each approach. But which one do you want at the foundation of your life?
Event + Response = Outcome. Do the work.
