Risk and uncertainty are inherent to life but essential to a good life. Because a good life requires work, courage, conviction, and a willing spirit. There is only so much risk and uncertainty you can hide from before you are the one causing the damage you are desperately trying to avoid.

You cannot escape risk in your life, so you might as well understand it better. You cannot eliminate uncertainty either, but you can better understand yourself and your relationship with it.

Reflect on these questions this week as you enter the sunset of another year:

  1. What do I regret in 2024?
  2. What have I learned about myself in 2024?
  3. What is possible for me in the year ahead that will not happen unless I make a meaningful change in my behavior?
  4. Of my regrets, how many stem from my lack of courage or willingness to do something I know is necessary?
  5. What opportunities for success or fulfillment am I sacrificing because of my desire for predictability and certainty?
  6. How am I limiting my opportunities to get what I want by avoiding risk, uncertainty, and friction?
  7. How well do I understand the risks I am creating for myself because of the risks I am avoiding?
  8. How can I begin choosing more and smarter risks that benefit me rather than keep hiding from them?

The most popular risk in life is never giving yourself a chance.
