Criticism and resentment

A common unspoken belief is that as you get better, you’ll receive more recognition and less criticism. The expectation is for improvement to be met with reward not resentment.

The reality you experience when you actually improve can be a harsh contrast to your expectations.

Getting better is met with more criticism, not less. Other people frequently resent your improvement, not necessarily support it. It even (especially) comes from friends, family, and colleagues.

There is no scenario where you get better without exposing yourself to more criticism and certain people resenting your improvement. Prepare for that, don’t be surprised by it, because it is the unavoidable price of improvement.

Embrace the chase. Do the work.
