What you’ve learned from past experience is easy to remember fondly because you’re here now. Experiences seem more special or informative in hindsight. The pain is over, the price was paid, and you’ve survived enough to learn something from it. “Everything happens for reason”, people like to say.
The experience of learning in the moment and in the future is harder to embrace because you don’t know where it leads. You don’t know what will happen, the price you’ll have to pay, how long it will last, and you have no guarantee you’ll get the payoff you want. Right now, you’re not in that future yet, with the lessons learned and your spot secured. Right now, you’re on the edge.
The edge can be terrifying or the edge can be fun. It’s probably both. You choose which one to make it. There is no shortage of fear to be found in the unknown future. If that’s what you want to look for, you’ll find it or you’ll create it. But there is also no shortage of fun in that uncertainty. Getting excited about the learning process at the edge will not give you a guarantee of success, but it improves your odds and gives you more control over your own experience.
