Ok, so a ton of you asked even MORE questions and feedback about writing DON’T and DOs to kick start your day, including what is on my list. I’ll share what’s been on my list recently, which hopefully helps you too.

General principles I use when writing my DON’T and DOs.

  • I start with my DON’Ts because if I can’t avoid these they will steal my time, burn my energy, and derail my effort until I have none left for my priorities.
  • It helps me to decide first thing in the morning what I’m not going to do today. It makes me more clear and responsible. For example: will I complain today . . . yes or no? I’d rather make that decision at 6:30am based on who I want to be and how I want to feel today.
  • My DO’s are either the most important action on my most important priorities or actions that make me live up to who I believe I am.
  • I never, ever, ever worry about my lists becoming repetitive or changing. It doesn’t matter.
  • Keeping them to only three behaviors requires me to make decisions and be responsible for them.
  • I only focus on the next 24 hours when I write my behaviors. Literally only the next 24 hours. It keeps me self-aware, self-disciplined, and self-confident in executing what I write. I can do anything for 24 hours.

Here are some things that have made my list this year on any given morning. None of these may apply to you and that’s the point. They’re only for me. My decisions. My priorities. My responsibilities. My preferences. My discipline. But seeing my list might create a spark, so I’ll share.

DON’T . . .

  • Avoid the work.
  • Lose the moment.
  • Eat sugar.
  • Drink alcohol.
  • Use social from 8a-12p.

DO . . .

  • Train hard.
  • Read something and apply it.
  • Build strength.
  • Choose discipline.
  • Write my book.

Keep it simple. Make decisions. Be responsible for your decisions. Do you.

Do the work. Embrace the chase.
