No one can really protect your emotions.

People talk a lot about being triggered these days. Triggered by little and big things. Triggered by intentional and unintentional things. Triggered by words, actions, even ideas.

Growing opinion today suggests a trigger is something you shouldn’t have to experience. That you can and should eliminate anything that triggers an unwanted emotion in you.

I suppose there are some contexts where that might be appropriate, maybe even useful. But I can’t think of many.

Because it’s less what the trigger is and more what is triggered in you. Anything that triggers you is your opportunity to learn about yourself. How you see. How you think. How you feel. What you do.

When you view something, anything, that triggers you as an opportunity to understand yourself instead, you see that it’s really about you.

Discipline is the shortcut. Do the work.
