Quick rule for creating messages worth sending

Communication is spectacularly complex. Perfecting it is impossible, but simple disciplines, as usual, create the best results. One thing in your control is the intention of the messages you send. (We’ll save execution for later).

Check the intention of your message by answering this question first, “What do I want this person to understand?” People are unlikely to understand you, at least not the way you want, if you aren’t even clear with yourself first. You’re more likely to send unintended messages or ones easy to misinterpret.

Once you can honestly and accurately answer that question, do your best to communicate it the best way you know how. You may or may not be good enough to get that message through. The person may or may not be ready to hear it. But at least you can act and adjust confidently knowing you are intentional about communicating a message worth sending or not sending it at all.
