E+R=O isn’t just about creating great outcomes. It’s about preventing bad ones. Because sometimes the best outcome is the bad outcome that never happens.
You won’t always win, but that doesn’t mean accepting losing responses. You try to win. You try to create the best outcome. In that process, among your first responsibilities, is not engaging in responses that reliably lead to losing or other unfavorable outcomes.
It’s your responsibility to make sure your response does not create, allow, or accelerate those kinds of outcomes. Or make an already painful outcome worse.
Aim high, set high standards, and chase excellence. Just recognize that doing that means you must not be the cause of your own failures.
This naturally leads to one of the most life-changing E+R=O principles, one that has guided my life for 35 years, long before I even knew what E+R=O was.
Monday, I’ll explain the principle that changed everything for me.
Event + Response = Outcome. Do the work.
