What is a “belief”?

Leaning further into beliefs this week, it occurs to me that I haven’t established a shared understanding of what I mean by a “belief.”

Tomorrow, I will share a dramatic truth about our beliefs that can be emotionally difficult to accept. But, if your mind is open and disciplined, tomorrow’s unique insight could spark a massive personal transformation. Anyway, that’s for tomorrow.

Before then, I must answer the primary question, “What is a belief?”.

A belief is any perspective you have some confidence in or accept as true about:

  1. How the world works
  2. What is true vs. false
  3. What is right vs. wrong
  4. What works vs. what doesn’t
  5. What matters vs. what doesn’t
  6. What is possible vs. impossible
  7. What is important vs. what isn’t
  8. What is more valuable vs. less valuable
  9. What is more effective vs. less effective
  10. How things should be vs. how they shouldn’t be

When I read this list, one burning question consumes me: How do we decide what to believe and what not to believe?

In other words, how do we decide when to:

  • Believe something
  • Genuinely consider it
  • Reject it
  • Change our beliefs in either direction

That’s the topic I’m going to address tomorrow. Today is preparation for tomorrow’s revelation. So review the two lists above a few more times before you read the next Daily Discipline message.

The time is now. Do the work.
