When emotions go up, clarity goes down.

Heightened emotions can either hijack your mind or focus it. The difficult part is figuring out which one is happening in the moment. Emotions are quick, convincing, and want you to react.

When I’m in a heightened emotional state or environment, I use a three-step checklist to keep my head on straight: understand . . . execute . . . adjust. These simple checkpoints direct my focus, keep me grounded, and are obvious to remember.

Understand what’s going on beyond my perceptions, opinions, and feelings. Execute as soon as I can to the best of my ability with the understanding I have.

Adjust my understanding and my action based on my experience and what I learn.

Discipline is the shortcut. Do the work
