Here’s a big secret we’ve uncovered after 15 years and thousands of sessions with people in almost every industry, every role, at every level of performance: Most people never try to be elite. It has almost nothing to do with whether they’re capable. It’s rarely because they tried, but failed. We do see plenty of people who try once and quit if it doesn’t work immediately or on the first try. Now we understand, because of direct observation, most people never actually, really try be elite. We aim to change that, or at least make as much impact as we can while we’re here. You are invited to join us on that mission.

10 Reasons (most) people accept average

There is huge opportunity, with plenty of available space, for those who do aim for elite and keep trying until they get there. But you need to avoid the stumbling blocks that trip people up in getting started and staying the course. Most of them are mental or emotional barriers, not physical or environmental limitations. Here are some of them.

10 reasons (most) people accept average and don’t even *try* to be elite:

  1. Feel discouraged before they start.
  2. Continuous temptations to opt-out of the work.
  3. Preference for comfort and convenience.
  4. Follow the crowd and popular fads.
  5. Constantly waste time on the quick fix and easy promise.
  6. Avoid building skills that require time to attain.
  7. Protect their self-image and ego.
  8. Blame others and the world and the system.
  9. Politically or morally justify their non-effort.
  10. Disconnect from true desire to improve or achieve.

Whether you go all-in on being elite or work hard to stay average, you’re going to pay either way. The cost of becoming elite is high. The cost of staying average is much, much higher.

Do the work.
