All my keynotes begin with the same statement. "The objective is professional. The journey is personal."

Personal skills are at the core of your professional growth. It's not a theoretical relationship. It's a practical one. It's not a concept. It's a fact. How you think, feel, decide, and act as a person guides who you are and what you do as a professional.

Here are three personal disciplines that drive professional growth:

Humility

A willingness to ground yourself in honest awareness and assessment is key to growth, no matter how good you think you are. Humility increases self-confidence and decreases self-importance — a rare, powerful, and attractive combo.

Focus

The defining trait that unlocks our maximum capacity as human beings is an uninterrupted focus on one task. The environments we work in do not make this easy. Weak discipline will fail. Strong discipline is required.

Courage

Fear and doubt will accompany you through every stage of your professional journey, making courage a repeatedly necessary catalyst for growth. Courage pushes you to start, continue, finish, and start over.

What personal journey do you need to go on in order to achieve your next professional objective?
