Be ready to change in an instant

Predicting the way things are going to happen is hard. You can observe and guess, but that’s the best you can do. Anticipating what will happen, when it will happen, and how it will happen just isn’t in our power to reliably do. At the macro level, we are wrong more than we’re right about things like markets, technology, industries, and social trends. At the micro level, we have even less ability to know what will happen in a given day, drive, relationship, or competition.

You must be positioned and prepared to adjust at any moment. Whatever you think your future looks like, it’s going to happen different than you imagine, from today through the remainder of your life. Today will not go the way you want. It will go the way it goes, with as much unpredictability and disinterest in your preferences as every other day. That’s why you have to be able to adjust in an instant, because no matter how much you thought you wouldn't need to, you will.
