One of the foundations to build into your life is ensuring you always have as much access to accurate, relevant, and actionable information as possible. The highest priority is information closest to you that impacts your life in real ways. The further away from you the information itself is, the lower it gets in priority because it is lower in relevance and actionable value to your responsibilities.
Understanding the relevant truths in your house is much more important than understanding less relevant truths in your neighbor’s house or in the White House.
How do you separate what is true and relevant from what lacks truth or relevance? Well, that’s a bigger charge than we’re prepared to attempt to answer here today. Instead, let’s focus on a single variable that can improve your access to truth and relevance.
Give certain people the responsibility to share unfiltered information with you. Raw truth. The uncomfortable, awkward kind most people desperately avoid. You can’t do this with everyone, but you can do it with the right people. It may take you a while to figure out who these people are for you, including some trial & error, but you can do it. You’d be amazed how much valuable information you’re currently not getting just because it’s awkward for people to say it to you.
Give key people this mission and your permission. Let them know the role you want them to play in your life. Ask them to commit to this high standard with you. Tell them you rely on them to tell you the truth no matter how ugly, unpleasant, or inconvenient. And that you need this information because it’s so hard to come by and so few are willing to share it.
Communicate your trust and confidence in them, why you believe in them to do this for you, and uphold your end of the relationship by listening and understanding when they do share those difficult truths.
Answer the call. Do the work.
