Everything will change.

When we undertake an effort we want to see a payoff. Brains are wired like that. We expect a return on our invested actions, especially for objectives with emotional significance. At a minimum we want to see positive movement in the direction of our goal. And not just see, but feel like progress is going in a good direction.

But life doesn’t follow straight lines. It doesn’t consider the expectations in our heads. It zigs, zags, dips and drags. It’s unpredictable, guaranteed only to surprise. Life doesn’t care about our wants, our plans, our dreams, or our measurements of progress. It doesn’t care because it doesn’t know them. You know them.

When you undertake an effort, when you invest action in something of significance, what gets tested is your willingness to work through what really happens rather than how you wanted it to go. Your desire to make it successful must remain greater than your desire or expectations for progress.

Discipline is the shortcut. Do the work.
