Ask yourself first.

What you need changes week-to-week, day-to-day, moment-to-moment. It changes by context, mood, consequences, and people involved. We all need different things at different times for different reasons.

Ask yourself in any moment, “What do I need right now?” Use this list of five to get you moving in the direction of self-awareness.

  • Understanding - Someone to listen without judgment and get you.
  • Encouragement - Someone to believe in you and tell you.
  • Reinforcement - Someone to confirm you’re doing the right things.
  • Challenge - Someone to challenge your thoughts, decisions, and actions.
  • Accountability - Someone to show you how you’re operating or performing compared to expectations.

It’s a safe bet that your needs in any moment come back to one or more of these five. When you start with self-awareness you put yourself in a much better position to get your needs met.

Discipline is the shortcut. Do the work.
