When you procrastinate, it is not because you struggle with taking action. You engage in plenty of actions all the time. You eat, drink, move, talk, drive, go to work, turn on the TV, make dinner, and plenty of other actions. No, you do not struggle taking action.
Procrastination is a resistance to taking specific actions, usually because of what those actions involve, what they mean, and the emotions you experience during them.
Think about it.
How did you open this email? You just did it.
How will you get to your next destination? You will just do it.
How will you find your next meal? You will just do it.
You do plenty. You do not struggle with doing. But you might feel the pull of procrastination to resist doing certain things.
Ask yourself, “Why? Why do I take action on that but hesitate to do this? Why am I resisting this but not that?”
Ask yourself, “What does this action involve that I am trying to avoid? What meaning am I giving to this action that I am avoiding? What emotions do I experience or expect from this action that I am trying to escape?”
You do not struggle with action. You can figure out the action, but first, you need to figure out what is going on within you that is blocking you from doing what you are capable of doing.
Brick by brick. Do the work.
