One popular but false belief about discipline

There are tons of distorted opinions about discipline commonly accepted as true. It’s easy to absorb a false belief when it’s packaged in a witty quote and promoted by people in your peer group. Some distorted opinions are well intended but misguided. Some are shallow and useless. Some are dangerous.

Today we’ll address just one popular but false belief about discipline: that building the habit makes it easier and turns into something that happens without having to think about it. As if you wake up and “have” disciplined habits.

Truth is, discipline must be renewed daily. Nothing is more variable. One day you’re committed. Two days later you’re resistant. One moment it’s easy to access. The next moment it’s the last thing you want to do.

Discipline isn’t a possession. It’s an intention. It isn’t something to be had. It’s something to be done. Discipline doesn’t get easier. You get better.

Embrace the chase. Do the work.
