The defining aspect of character is courage: what do you do when you’re afraid and uncomfortable? That is your true character.
Character needs to overcome challenges to fulfill its purpose. If your character never meets an opposing impulse or temptation, how do you know its strength or value? What is it worth if your character doesn’t hold up under the pressure of fear and discomfort?
Character is necessary because of the opposing forces it pushes back against. The point of character is to provide clarity, strength, and stability amidst the storm. The stronger the force, the stronger your character must be.
Fear and discomfort, along with a host of other challenges, are the true testing points of character. Sometimes no one is looking. Sometimes everyone is.
The time is now. Do the work.
