Usually I begin with a message worth sharing. Today I begin with a question worth asking: Where does courage come from?
Typing this sentence, I don’t have a simple, confident answer why one person acts with more courage than another. Important questions often don’t have certain answers. Just more questions. Let’s ask four.
First, does courage come from inside of us or outside of us?
Courage comes from inside of us. Encouragement and discouragement come from outside of us.
Second, are we born with courage or do we learn it?
Yes, both. We’re born with natural wiring, including courage or the absence of it, and we learn from there based on experience, exposure, and effort.
Third, does courage in one thing mean courage in all things?
No. Courage doesn’t transfer well. Courageous people in one situation are insecure in another. Watch a lion become a sheep when you change its arena.
Fourth, is courage in our control or not in our control?
Yes, courage is in our control. Our starting point is not in our control. Natural wiring determines that. It is in our power to become as courageous as we want to be.
Where does courage come from? In a word . . . you.
