Most of you are familiar with E+R=O (Event + Response = Outcome). It is the lens through which I see the world and make decisions. Many of you have joined in, too.

We can't control events. We can't control outcomes. All we control is our response.
E+R=O is the way life works. Our job is to get good at it.

Here are 11 E+R=O Rules to Remember:

  1. It's not the event's fault your response isn't working.
  2. 85% of your life is responding to less-than-ideal events.
  3. Your control over your response is the difference between your emotions bringing out the best or worst in you.
  4. If you genuinely want to be successful and happy, you must respond to events as they are, not as you wish they were.
  5. High-value outcomes are not created by one great response but by dozens, often hundreds, of disciplined responses.
  6. Just because a response led to a good outcome does not mean it was a good response.
  7. Every response leads the way to another response.
  8. No response is a response.
  9. Every response creates a path for more responses like that.
  10. An unfair event does not justify an undisciplined response.
  11. Once you understand E+R=O, everything is E+R=O.
