Most people never grow beyond childhood discipline.
You first learn discipline by following rules and obeying commands. In both cases, someone else draws the lines you can’t cross: parents, teachers, coaches, or a person in charge.
But to mature in your discipline, you must grow beyond obedience and compliance. You must learn true discipline. Where you set your own high standards. Where you keep your actions lined up with those standards.
This is why even the most obedient and compliant teams lose to disciplined teams.
Obedient teams do what they’re supposed to do. Compliant teams do things the right way. But disciplined teams?
Disciplined teams act from high standards because it is who they are. They don’t need anyone telling them what to do. They choose it willingly.
Disciplined people live high standards because, given all the options, it’s the option they want to choose. It doesn’t come from a command. They don’t do it because they’re supposed to.
It comes from the heart. It comes from their identity.
Discipline that comes from the heart beats obedience that comes from someone else’s rules and commands. Every time.
Event + Response = Outcome. Do the work.
