80% of the time I process E+R=O in this order because it’s the most strategic way and I like to stay on offense:

  1. What outcome do I want here?
  2. What do I need to understand about the event?
  3. Given what I want, and what I’m dealing with, what’s the most disciplined response I can engage in right now?

20% of the time I reverse the order of my thought process because the context demands it:

  1. What is the reality of the event that just happened?
  2. Given that reality, how does my outcome need to adjust?
  3. To get that outcome with this event, how do I need to respond now?

The equation is read from left to right. That doesn’t mean it needs to be applied that way. Pay attention to context. Be strategic. Use E+R=O to stay on offense.

Discipline is the shortcut. Do the work.

Not everyone is competitive. That’s ok. But for those who are competitive or need to be . . . these 5 learnable skills create Competitive Excellence.
