You go to sleep and wake up in a bed you chose for comfort. You live in a home you chose and organized for convenience. You use technology all day long, digital and mechanical, to make your life easier.
Each of us lives within the bounds of human nature. And human nature gravitates to comfort, convenience, and ease. That’s not a good thing or a bad thing. It’s a human nature thing.
You don’t sleep in a bed that makes you itchy, put your toilets outside your house, or refuse to use helpful technologies.
Your desire for comfort, convenience, and ease is part of your nature. But that doesn’t mean you are a slave to those desires. You are not helpless against their pull. You are not bound to comfort like heat is bound to fire and cold is bound to ice.
Part of your nature desires comfort, convenience, and ease. But other parts exist, too. A desire for meaning, significance, and fulfillment is also in your nature. As is the desire to overcome, achieve, and see how high your abilities reach.
The beauty of life is that while you are bound to human nature, you get to decide what shape it takes in your life. You decide what to do with your nature, how to use it, and for what purpose.
That’s why discipline is so crucial to the quality of your life. Discipline doesn’t change your nature, but it helps you steer it towards the purpose, excellence, and fulfillment you desire.
