“He’s a nice person, but . . . .”

Being a good person doesn’t directly correlate to producing good results. Character and competence are separate choices.

You can be a good person and set your standards too low to create what you want. You can be a good person and lack the toughness to endure a difficult path. You can be a good person and just not be good enough at your job.

There’s no shame here. There’s no “supposed to”. Both can be practiced and improved. Just don’t equate character with competence, or the reverse.

Embrace the chase. Do the work.

PS - To answer the question many of you would ask: yes, being a bad person will eventually catch up with you and cost you, even if you’re great at your job.
