A big reason why people lack accountability is because they associate it with negative consequences. Your whole life you’ve heard “Be accountable” or “Be held accountable” in the context of something done wrong. It’s never for what you did right or with excellence.
People avoid accountability because in their minds, justifiably, it means punishment. It’s natural to flinch from and avoid punishment.
True accountability is neutral. It’s just observation and action. Watch what happens, how it’s done, and the results. Act on what you see. Accountability is just as important for a job well done as it is for owning mistakes. If all you use accountability for is mistakes and punishment, you’re missing most of the picture.
Discipline is the shortcut. Do the work.
