Every word has a definition. A precise explanation, in language, of what it means. But a definition only captures the formal clarification of a word. It misses where human meaning gets created and lives: in emotions.
Certain words connect to powerful ideas, feelings, and experiences that carry meaning beyond and deeper than a definition. For example . . . freedom, family, and faith. The definition of a word doesn’t compare to the power of the personal meaning you assign to it.
Discipline is a word like that. It has a definition. You also assign it a personal meaning. That meaning creates emotions in you. What really matters is not what the dictionary says or what I say, but what you say to yourself about it. Not because it changes the definition or reality, but because the meaning you assign changes you.
Discipline is the shortcut. Do the work.
I’m putting my discipline into practice in a series called #ProjectScratch. Here’s the latest episode.
