Yesterday I said that our fatal flaw is weak discipline to act in alignment with the principles we already know. How does weak discipline like that find its way into your life? Through rationalizations, justifications, and excuses.
You might tell yourself that certain specifics about your life mean a truth doesn’t apply to you.
Yes, it does.
That some unique variable in your story means a principle doesn’t work for you.
Yes, it does.
That although it may be true, you and your situation are the exception.
No, you are not.
You are uniquely you. Your story is uniquely yours. Your situation is uniquely yours.
The truth doesn’t care, and neither do the principles of discipline. They apply in your life as they do in mine. They work in your story as they do in others’. Context and details differ. Principles transcend.
The most powerful principles are universal. They transcend time. They transcend context. They transcend any of our excuses.
Timeless truth and principles do not change to accommodate excuses, low self-awareness, or slow learners. They might bend but never break. We crash into them until we learn, or we break ourselves against them.
You can say, “That doesn’t apply to me.” Meanwhile, it has applied to you the whole time. You can say, “That wouldn’t work in my situation.” Meanwhile, it’s working for tons of people in your situation and could be working for you.
Breathe deep and tune into your conscience. You might feel that self-awareness within you right now.
Principles don’t stop applying to you because of your particular life details. They operate as they always have and apply as they always do.
You decide whether to see that with discipline or blind yourself with excuses.
Event + Response = Outcome. Do the work.
