When I challenged you this week to evaluate and raise your standards, many of you asked, "Which standards?"
Fair question, but I won't answer that entirely for you. I'd like you to own some responsibility for identifying which parts of your life deserve evaluation and which standards are worth raising.
I will share responsibility with you by discussing areas where I believe standards matter, starting with what you put in your mind and body.
Anyone familiar with systems and engineering knows the rule: Quality in, quality out. Garbage in, garbage out.
It means that the quality of the output from a system is dependent on the quality of the input into that system. You can’t expect any system to produce excellence with low-quality resources or resources detrimental to excellence.
Your body and your mind are the two most essential systems in your life. They produce everything you believe, know, feel, experience, do, and accomplish.
The first place I encourage you to evaluate and raise your standards is to match the input you give your mind and body with the output you want most.
I like starting here not only because these are the two most important systems in your life — mind and body — but also because it’s relatively easy to evaluate. If you try to hide from the truth during this process, you’ll know it. If you try to negotiate with yourself, you’ll know it.
So check in with your standards of what you put into your mind and body. Quality in, quality out.
The time is now. Do the work.
