Self-aware feedback.

It’s hard to give critical feedback that is received just right by the other person. You can’t control how they perceive it. You only control how you send it. So much of the hesitation in giving feedback isn’t because of the feedback itself, but the reaction to your feedback. It’s fear of the other person’s emotions.

Think about it. When there’s zero risk your message will be misinterpreted or negatively received, you’re not afraid to share it. It’s the unfavorable reaction you dread that influences what you share and how you share it.

Fear of people’s perceptions and reactions can drive a lot of weak messages, hidden truths, and avoided topics.

Keep this in mind, not just when you’re giving feedback, but also when you’re receiving it.

Discipline is the shortcut. Do the work.
