The 1-2-3 stages of improvement

Getting better happens in stages, not switches. Growth doesn’t suddenly switch from doubtful to confident, default to discipline, bad to good. It happens through a series of stages, each better than the previous, but still far from the best version. Learn to love the middle stages where there is improvement without achievement. Be better than before even when you’re not good yet.

The 1-2-3 Stages of Improvement

Simply apply this by using three stages rather than two. It’s START —> MIDDLE —> END, not BEFORE —> AFTER. Seeing only two versions of you — good or bad, capable or incapable — ignores the essential element of progress without production or perfection.

The 1-2-3 approach looks like this: (Stage 1) starting point, (Stage 2) better, but still awkward, and (Stage 3) confident and secure goal state.

Here’s how the 1-2-3 stages work with BCD:

Stage 1: You BCD and no one likes it, but the people who like you put up with it.
Stage 2: You don’t BCD as frequently, but you want to, and it feels awkward. Plus you’re not much better at solving problems.
Stage 3: You don’t BCD, you don’t want to, and it feels great. You’re better at solving problems or ignoring things you can’t control.

How can this improve your approach to change and personal growth? Comment below with how you will apply this.
