People talk about privilege like it’s a magic pill to success, but in many ways it’s a handicap. This will never be a popularly accepted opinion and that’s fine. It’s our responsibility to see reality clearly, not follow what’s popular.
In plenty of cases, privilege and the entitlement that often comes with it is what leads people down unfulfilling and unproductive paths. Their privilege is a weakness not a strength. It’s something that has to be overcome more than something that provides a distinct advantage.
Privilege shields people from important life realities like hunger, resilience, and consequences. Things that are the building blocks of a good person, a good career, a good life. It can allow weakness to exist unchallenged and lessons to go unlearned until it’s too late.
The absence of privilege for many people was the root of their growth. It wasn’t a footnote from their past. It was the driving force of their success. The presence of some imposed adversity was the start of their most important personal journey. Overcoming and learning from their circumstances, however unfair, was how they built their most valuable assets.
You may have incredible advantages and privileges. You may have incredible adversity and challenges. You can capitalize on both. You can also squander either one.
The difference isn’t in your circumstances. It’s in you and what you do with them.
Everything is training for something. Do the work.
