The future is part mystery, part certainty. You know you’ll have meaningful relationships but not which ones will improve and which ones will break. You know the field you work in will evolve but not how it will alter your life’s path. You know you’re going to die but not when or how.
What good does that awareness do for you now? Two things.
First, bring your full self to today. It’s the only day you’re guaranteed. It’s the only one you can ever enjoy. It’s always the day where your best work has to be done.
Second, keep putting yourself in position for the future. Today is the gateway to tomorrow and the rest of your life. Whether the future is expected or unexpected, ideal or problematic is secondary. It will be all of those things for you and more.
What’s primary is capitalizing on the certainty of today to position yourself well for the mystery of tomorrow. Whatever it brings.
Discipline is the shortcut. Do the work.
