What does your calling require?

There is no exact formula for finding your calling. But there are requirements.

  1. Your first steps are always into uncertainty. Even when you are certain of your calling, the path is unseen, unpaved, uncertain, and unpredictable.
  2. You must take the first steps alone. You cannot go with anyone else. You cannot follow anyone else’s path. You will meet people who will help you, even guide you, but only after you take the first steps alone.
  3. The first step will feel terrifying. So will the challenges you face along the way. As will the final test. You must prove yourself worthy of your calling by facing your fears and fighting through them, and by facing your weaknesses and overcoming them.
  4. You will have to leave behind things you care about. Good things and good people. But they’re not your calling and staying attached to them will prevent you from fulfilling your purpose.
  5. The thing you are most scared to do and where you feel the most doubt will, at some point, be the only way to complete your journey and fulfill your purpose.
  6. Whatever you think it will cost you to pursue your calling, the cost of ignoring your calling is far higher and delivers only empty rewards.

You can’t skip or negotiate your way around any of these. The only way to get there is through.

The question you must answer is, “Which life do I want to live: the unfulfilled life controlled by fear or the fulfilling life on the other side of fear?”

Event + Response = Outcome. Do the work.
