What is going on?

Back in the March 19 Daily Discipline email, I wrote: Heightened emotions hijack your mind or focus it. The hard part is figuring out which one is happening in the moment. Emotions are quick, convincing, and want you to react.

How true does that ring now given the series of events that have swept across the globe in the three months since I sent that note? Almost daily, events are triggering fear and anger, perspectives are provoking rage and judgment, changes are sparking resistance and opposition.

So much of what I’ve observed for the past three months is reacting, not responding. Fear, judgment, self-preservation, and subjective opinion based on selective attention are dominating the landscape. It’s impossible to build confidence and strengthen connections while stuck in a cycle of reaction to daily events.

When people are caught in an emotional wave of reaction there is no concern for accurate evaluation, no time used for discernment, no consideration for intent, no space for discussion, no interest in empathy, no forgiveness for mistakes, no room for growth.

We can’t afford to live that way. Not now. Not ever.

Discipline is the shortcut. Do the work.
