Why act with low confidence?

If you want an effort to succeed, are there any good reasons to act with low confidence?

Imagine someone you care about came to you for advice.

They’re applying for a job, taking on a higher leadership role, pitching a new product, or launching their own business. Maybe they’re moving to a new city, starting a series of difficult conversations, having their first kid, or building life after a divorce.

Would you ever encourage them to do it, but not confidently?

Even if their task was difficult and they had no experience. Would you tell them to keep their confidence low or do it with as much confidence as they can?

Even if you know they will make mistakes. Would you tell them to move forward with low confidence, timid action or high confidence, disciplined action?

I bet, and I hope, you would encourage them to decide and act confidently. Because if they’re going to do it, what purpose does low confidence serve? Not good outcomes. Who does it serve? Not the person’s best interest.

Now, imagine the person coming to you for advice is you from next month. Imagine this is your chance to give yourself the reminder you will soon need. Though the path is difficult, walk it with confidence.

Not because you know everything you need to know. Not because you won’t make mistakes. But because if you’re going to do something, do it with confidence.

Don’t tiptoe into decisions. Don’t drag your feet into action. Don’t limp along the path.

Plant your feet, take a step forward in faith, and walk tall with confidence in yourself.

Event + Response = Outcome. Do the work.
