You won’t know until you start writing

I have an assignment for you, if you’re up for an energizing challenge.

Grab your favorite notebook, ideally a Daily Discipline Journal, and pick up a pen.

The assignment is simple: write a note that you would give yourself five years ago.

You’re not allowed to reveal the future. So no telling yourself what’s going to happen. But you can share the clarity and confidence you have now that you may not have had then.

There’s practical value in writing a note like this. It’s a chance to reflect on decisions you made, the paths you chose, the ones you didn’t choose, and the ones you’re still trying to figure out.

But the real value you get from this is emotional. I can’t tell you exactly what emotional value is in it for you, but it’s there and it’s profound. Possibly life-changing. The only way to receive it is to sit down and write the note honestly.

You’ll never know what you would say until you sit quietly with a pen in hand and see what emerges when you start writing.

  • What would you encourage yourself to do?
  • What would you caution yourself not to do?
  • What would you tell yourself to prioritize?
  • What would you tell yourself to ignore?

You’ve experienced a lot in the past five years. You’ve learned about yourself, your fears, and your desires. You’ve learned about the world, too.

You talk to yourself all day every day. This is just a more disciplined way of doing it.
Will you give it a try?

Event + Response = Outcome. Do the work.
