Your arena

We’re all in certain arenas in life.

Maybe it’s a professional goal. A relationship challenge. A personal struggle. A moment of opportunity and the adversity that comes with it. A moment of adversity and the opportunity waiting on the other side.

Think about the arenas you’re in right now.

Here’s what you must remember: The arena doesn’t determine the outcome. Your performance in it does.

Ask yourself:

What is the arena? Name it. What stage are you on? What circumstances are you facing? What consequences are at stake?

What can you control in this arena? Not the circumstances. Not the setup. Not fairness or unfairness. Not the rules, if there are any. You control your attention. Your effort. Your response. Your adjustments. That’s what creates your performance and your results.

Who else is in the arena? Some arenas you share. You perform together with teammates, family, or friends. Some arenas you stand in alone. Know which one you’re in.

What story are you telling yourself? The arena is the stage. You are the performer who decides what to do with the stage you’re on. The arena is a blank page. You write the story through your performance. What story are you trying to write? What performance are you prepared to give?

The arena can be kind or brutal. The arena can be easy or hard, supportive or hostile. It’s still just the arena. It’s not you.

The arena doesn’t determine your performance. You do.

Arenas don’t produce your results. You do.

Event + Response = Outcome. Do the work.
