I love E+R=O*. Nothing frames the cause & effect of life better. For those who choose a path of personal responsibility, E+R=O is the one essential mindset and skill set to develop for the rest of your life, no matter what stage of your life.

You might think something this simple would mean it's obvious to understand and easy to master. You'd be wrong. The skill set of E+R=O has shocking depth for an equation with only three letters and two mathematical symbols.

Here's a quick series of insights that will lead to huge breakthroughs for many of you. I'll show you how the skill set of E+R=O is the combination of three separate but related skills: (1) choosing outcomes, (2) understanding events, and (3) responding well.

Choosing Outcomes

  1. Choose the primary outcome you want to create independent of external events and before you begin experiencing them, whenever possible.
  2. There are multiple outcomes on the line in every situation. Put them in priority order of pursuit according to importance and impact.
  3. Sometimes the outcome you want isn't possible, in which case your responsibility is to identify the next best possible outcome you can create.

Understanding Events

  1. You rarely respond well to what you don't see, so understanding events requires highly intentional and impartial observation.
  2. It doesn't matter what you expected to happen or what you think events should be. Your responsibility is to understand events as they are.
  3. You are a contributor in some way to every event you experience.

Responding well

  1. The quality of your response begins with the quality of your perspective, thoughts, and emotions. Strength and skill externally must be fed by strength and skill internally.
  2. One quality response, even a heroic one, will not create a high-quality outcome.
  3. No event or combination of events can prevent you from responding well. Only you can do that.

Did any of these surprise you? Why? If you use these insights, let me know how it goes!

Answer the call. Do the work.
