Advance or Retreat?

Discomfort is not a magical tool. People promote it that way, but discomfort doesn't inherently solve anything. You can fill your life with discomfort and live in discomfort without getting much value out of it.

Discomfort for the sake of discomfort is silly.

That kind of discomfort is like wearing cement boots and a straight jacket. It's debilitating. Instead, look for enabling discomfort that serves a valuable purpose to enhance you or the situation.

I encourage you to use the lens of debilitating discomfort vs. enabling discomfort.

First, acknowledge the presence of your discomfort. Not only is it ok to admit that you're uncomfortable, it's imperative that you do. So when you feel uncomfortable, acknowledge that to yourself.

Then look for the purpose of the discomfort and the value on the other side of it.

Use this internal script as a starting point template when you encounter personal discomfort . . .

"I feel uncomfortable. What purpose would embracing this discomfort serve, and what value could it create? What purpose would avoiding this discomfort and retreating into comfort serve, and what value would that create?"

This awareness will help you make better decisions about whether to advance into discomfort or retreat into comfort.

The time is now. Do the work.
