Discipline is the only shortcut

I lived for a long time without appreciating, or even understanding, the role of discipline. It seemed unpleasant, likely because the experience of discipline was always unpleasant whenever teachers and coaches demanded it.

It wasn’t until deep into my 20s that I noticed a pattern in my life.

The more disciplined I was, the better my results got. Not only that, I made faster progress and produced the results I wanted more reliably. The pattern was unmistakable: discipline led to better, faster, more reliable outcomes.

I also noticed the alternative consequences. The further I drifted from discipline, the worse my results got. Goals stayed incomplete. Progress slowed or, in many cases, stopped. The only reliable thing when I wasn’t disciplined was my disappointment.

Noticing this pattern led me to an undeniable conclusion: the fastest and most reliable path between me and the result I want to create is through discipline. Discipline is the only shortcut.

That realization changed my life.

Avoid discipline if you want the least progress in the longest time. Embrace discipline if you want the most progress in the shortest time.

Event + Response = Outcome. Do the work.
