When status quo is unsustainable

When status quo is unsustainable, two curious behavior patterns emerge:

One behavior pattern is a refusal to change because it requires enforcing voluntary pain somewhere on someone. This pattern will preserve an unhealthy status quo because it is at least known and familiar. It stays on a path headed in a bad direction because it avoids taking on any new discomforts now.

Current comforts override the certainty of future failures.

The other behavior pattern is an attempt to change the status quo to keep the pain of change away from self-interests. This pattern will change the status quo as long as someone else bears the burden of pain that comes with the change. If it can do that, it will push the change forward. If it can’t, it will stonewall any attempts at change.

Self-interests override the urgency to course correct.

Event + Response = Outcome. Do the work.
