Two simple separators between average and exceptional are (1) an obsessive focus on executing the fundamentals well and (2) a willingness to return to the basics.
We're not interested in average here, so this week we are returning to the basics and reinforcing five fundamentals of discipline starting with choice.
If you pressed me to articulate what discipline is using only one word, I would use the word choice because that's where discipline lives or dies.
To become a disciplined person is to understand, above all else, your power choice. It's all a choice and you're the one who makes it.
Too often people look for discipline outside themselves in the form of rules, authorities, guides, or plans. Discipline can't be found out there because discipline comes from inside you. I remind myself with a simple phrase: discipline within.
The first fundamental of discipline is that it's always a choice and you are the only decision-maker. Returning to the basics to execute this exceptionally well means taking full responsibility for your choices — all of your choices — staying fully aware of each choice you make, and using that awareness to make the best choices possible.
Discipline is choice. In your choices lives your discipline. Build your discipline one choice at a time.
Answer the call. Do the work.
