Go deeper than compliance

Compliance and obedience can drive quality behavior. Compliance and obedience can drive a lot of consistent and strict behavior. Most people will comply and obey any directive delivered with enough authority and power behind it.

But it's not until someone understands it, believes in it, and chooses it on their own that we call them disciplined.

Compliance and obedience might be helpful — even necessary — early on to show the way and the standard. Our responsibility is to transition from compliance and obedience to self-driven discipline.

And if you lead people, it's your responsibility to push them into that transition and help them develop discipline within.

Brick by brick. Do the work.
