I Believe In You

Every Christmas people stack neatly wrapped gifts at the base of their trees and do their best to appreciate the gifts that never get wrapped. The ones that have nothing to do with Christmas that fill their lives. Christmas is just a season where they all come together and we slow down long enough to bring them into our clear-eyed gaze.

A gift is something given without expectation of return. It’s an act of giving that satisfies a want, fulfills a need, or provides value for the recipient. While physical gifts are a central tradition in the holiday season, the best gifts rarely are.

Gifts abound in our lives. We don’t always see them. We don’t always recognize them. We don’t always acknowledge them. We don’t always cherish them. Still they abound. They give to us whether or not we do any of those things. That’s what it means to give a gift. That’s what it means to be a gift. No expectations.

As is the Christmas spirit, it’s not the gifts we receive but the gifts we give that truly fill our hearts. The best gifts are never under the tree. They’re not wrapped in shiny paper or topped with a bow.

The best gift you can give, now or any other time, is the gift of belief. Belief in people. The people you’ve known forever and the people you meet along the way. See the best in them. See the greatness in them. See it if they don’t see it in themselves. See it if they do. See what’s warm and bright and wonderful. See what’s raw and buried and possible.

And when you see it, share it. Give the gift of, “I believe in you.”

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
