There are five core emotions:

  • Joy
  • Fear
  • Anger
  • Disgust
  • Sadness

Some schools of thought believe there are a few more or a few less “core” emotions, but this is the foundational list. There’s no benefit to you in that academic debate.

Every emotional experience in your life comes back to one or a combination of these core emotions. A good starting point for emotional self-awareness is to familiarize with these core emotions and how they express themselves under different focus, intensity, and combinations.

Discipline is the shortcut. Do the work.

PS - a helpful resource and visual I frequently use is called an “emotion wheel”. Google it and click the images section. It might be a good reference for you too.
