Today’s behavior skill is: OBSERVATION

At first glance observation may not seem like a behavior skill, partly because it’s always happening in some form, just on default with low awareness. Disengage the autopilot switch, take the controls and become an intentional, skillful observer.

The simple skill of observation is reading situations to recognize patterns and insights in the environment, other people, and yourself. Skillful observation allows you to recognize faster, anticipate sooner, and respond better.

Careful and skillful observation will not solve things for you, but it will reveal things to you that not everyone sees or understands. It is as close to a super power as you can get.

Self-awareness
What’s going on around you? What’s going on inside you? Why is it happening? How is it likely to go if it continues vs changes? Look for things that make a difference to your success or failure, not for personal preference, at least not at first. Observe with careful effort what works, what doesn’t, and why.

Self-discipline
Observing is free. It costs you nothing. Every waking moment is a chance to observe, learn, and understand the world, other people, and yourself better.

Self-confidence
Come to your own understandings and conclusions based on your careful observations. When you observe with skill, your decisions get better and your action gets more confident. You won’t always be right, but if your observation stays skillful, you’ll recognize when you’ve made an error and where. You can confidently correct it faster and more accurately.

Do the work.
