Turn the sting into self-awareness.

People will do things that harm you. They will hurt your feelings, sow seeds of doubt, and miss what you believe are obvious signals. People, like you, are imperfect. They make mistakes. Sometimes it stems from selfishness, stubbornness, or old habit. Most of the time I believe it’s more innocent than that. Unexpressed needs, lack of communication, and a disconnect of shared standards are easily misinterpreted and converted to threatening motives.

If you find yourself hurt, don’t immediately assume it’s the other person’s fault and attribute a motive to them that fits your feelings. Start with good assumptions. Hold up your end of responsibility. It’s ok to be hurt. But don’t double down on the pain.

Discipline is the shortcut. Do the work.
