Great leaders don’t do everything the same way. They don’t all share the same qualities, priorities, styles, or approaches. There are hundreds of styles and approaches to great leadership.

There are also principles of leadership that transcend style, that apply to any leader regardless of age, experience, or environment.

  1. To lead is to accept responsibility for more than yourself, which means responsibility for things you don’t control.
  2. Effective leadership makes people and performance better as a result of your contribution.
  3. If people lack confidence in you, they will lack confidence in how and where you lead them.
  4. Leadership requires no title, no authority, and no experience.
  5. If you want to lead people, figure out how to move their hearts.

If you want to be a great leader, ground yourself on leadership principles and explore your unique leadership style.

Everything is training for something. Do the work.
