You don’t get to skip the choice.

When someone asks me how to make something a habit, I always think, “Why do you want it to become a habit?” When I ask people they say, “So I can just do it without having to think about it.”

You have to think about it. You don’t get to skip the choice. You can only speed up your decision and step into action. That’s how you spend less time thinking about it and more time doing it.

I used to live on the 6th floor of an apartment and decided to take the stairs rather than the elevator when it was physically possible. I lived there for three years and walked six floors up and six floors down 90% of the time. Carrying groceries, getting mail, welcoming friends, or bringing my newborn son home from the hospital.

Never created a habit. Never expected the choice to get easier. Just chose it every damn time and acted quickly. Well, 90% of the time ;)

Embrace the chase. Do the work.
